Lilies - Exotic Blossoms for Everyday
At
Home
Just 3 glorious stems of Oriental lilies
in a beautiful crystal vase makes an artistic room accent. Types of lilies range
from the all white ‘Casa Blanca’, ‘Stargazer’ to ‘Siberia.’
- Some Oriental lilies have a
distinctive fragrance which can help to scent the room for special
occasions.
- In place of one large centerpiece –
consider using a series of vases (at least 8) in the center of the table.
Place full stems in some vases - just blossoms in others. The result is a
"tablescape" of color and form.
- Lilies of all types can also be grown
in your garden. Plant bulbs in the fall and wait for the stalks and blooms
in summer.
- Recycle your Easter lilies or any
potted lily plant by transplanting the bulbs (with stems attached) into your
garden. They will re-bloom again the following year.
- A great fall gift is a combination of
fresh lilies in a vase and the bulbs for planting in the recipient’s
garden to enjoy the next year.
- Place a small vase with a single
blossom by each place setting at a special home celebration.
- When your outfit demands a striking
floral accent – choose a single white lily blossom. (Remember to remove
the pollen bearing part before wearing!)
Flower Care
- Most species and cultivars should be purchased with color
showing on at least one flower.
- The end-user life span of the blooms is 4-11 days,
depending on species and cultivar.
- Remove spent blooms by pinching them off at the base.
- If pollen (the golden or reddish "dust" on the
anthers of each bloom) gets on your clothing, let it "dry," then
carefully brush it away with a dry, soft brush, facial tissue or a chenille
stem. You can also dab adhesive tape on the fabric until the pollen is gone.
Do not brush the pollen away with your hands (oils from your skin will set
the stain), and do not use water or a wet cloth (this will spread and set
the stain). If some pollen still remains, place the item in direct sunlight
for a couple of hours; the stain should disappear. Pollen stains can often
be removed from washable fabrics with an enzymatic detergent such as Era.
Remove anthers with a paper towel or garden glove by simply pulling them off
the filament.
